Beth's Cold-Frame

To try to get a head-start on planting without the expense of an actual greenhouse
was a challenge that I was not willing to back away from.

So I gathered my supplies:
  • some stereofoam sheets
  • a pair of old waterbed heaters
  • a sheet of plastic and some garden stakes
  • some peat moss

I used duct tape to hold together a box made from stereofoam.

I added some old water-bed heaters. My husband had wanted to throw them away.
My pack-rat tendancies are becoming obvious!

I added moistened peat moss & put in my little trays of seeds.

Then I covered the whole cold-frame up with a sheet of plastic.
Wooden stakes are used to hold the plastic off the plants.
Rocks are used to hold the ends of the plastic down.

The moist peat moss seems to distribute the heat from the heaters.
The seed trays stay fairly moist for long periods of time.

After the bedding plants are taken out of the cold-frame
and put into the garden, the frame is taken apart to be stored.

I will post more photos as the plants grow and let everyone
know how I make out with this totally cheap cold-frame.
